        3rd Shanghai Biennale

        Shanghai Shanghai Art Museum 2000

      1. Catalog accompanying the 3rd Shanghai Biennial, Shanghai, curated by Hou Hanru, Toshio Shimizu, Li Xu, and Zhang Qing (06.11.2000–06.01.2001), Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai. This was the first Shanghai Biennial open to international artists and curators and marked the biennale’s transformation from a provincial exhibition to becoming one of the main stages for contemporary art in China. The theme of ‘Shanghai Spirit’ was meant to suggest ‘openness’ and point to the city’s ‘unique blend of East and West.’ These optimistic thematics were criticized for avoiding comment on the unstoppable economic forces of China’s rapid globalization, human rights issues, and other political concerns; the selection of Chinese contemporary artists in particular was critiqued as highly conservative. Exhibited artists included: Matthew Barney, Ci Guoqiang, Chen Ping, Marlene Dumas, Hai Bo, Anish Kapoor, William Kentridge, Le Bul, Ken Lum, Mariko Mori, Shi Hui, Fiona Tan, Wang Jianwei, Yu Peng, etc.
