In this book Ranciére considers the links between philosophy and politics, and argues for disagreement as a key feature in productive political conflict. Here we also find the first instance of Ranciére’s by now well-known concept of ‘the politics of aesthetics’ in a text in which he analyzes the difference between ‘politics’ and ‘policing’ (chapter 1 The Beginning of Politics.)
