An assessment of the conflict between Islamic fundamentalism and the West, from a pre-9/11 perspective. Al-Azmeh argues that the root of the conflict is an irrational attachment to fixed cultural identities and points out the ways in which fundamentalism is an important break from traditional Islam in the sense that it expresses a kind of transnational populist movement.
