In this new translation of an early work (1983), Rancière takes the figure of ‘the poor’ to consider how key figures in philosophy and theory—from Plato to Marx and Bourdieu—have developed their philosophical thought keeping the struggle of the poor (and the worker) at the focal point of their writing on the workings of power, the individual vs. the state, the mechanisms of capitalism, etc.
