The exhibition, which was widely criticized as being too obtuse and concerned with ‘conservative’ issues such as form and beauty, stood in start contrast to Enwezor’s more polemically political documenta 11. Applauded for including a selection of works by important Central and Eastern European conceptualists. The exhibition was organized around three leitmotivs: ‘Is modernity our antiquity?,’ ‘What is bare life?,’ and ‘What is to be done?’. Lacking any critical or theoretical essays, the book contains two-page entries (information and image(s)) on each participating artist in the exhibition. Exhibited artists included: Ai Weiwei, Eleanor Antin, Trisha Brown, Cosmia von Bonin, Ion Grigorescu, Sanja Iveković, Mary Kelly, Jirí Kovanda, Zofia Kulik, Lee Lozano, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Gerwald Rockenschaub, Martha Rosler, Hito Steyerl, Artur Żmijewski, etc.
